Since I first participated in the REA symposium 2006 to present our work on agent-based simulation for the assessment of resilience in the emergency response system (Kanno et al. 2006), I have been working on issues related to both human factors- and disaster-related resilience. The key principle in our work is “human-centered disaster resilience,” that is, the idea that various human capabilities, including not only the four resilience potentials but also cooperation, collective intelligence, and other abilities, are the driving force and last line of defense for disaster response and recovery.
